GREAT FALLS — HEART BUTTE 72, SUNBURST 65

In a season of tough tests, the Heart Butte boys keep finding ways to win.

Down 48-43 to Sunburst entering the fourth quarter of Friday’s Northern C divisional championship, the Warriors found another level, outscoring the Refiners 29-17 in the final stanza to stay undefeated on the season and earn the No. 1 seed at next week’s State C tournament in Butte.

Sophomore star Riley Spoonhunter turned in another masterful performance, dropping 26 points to pace the Warriors. His co-star as usual was senior Shylon Spoonhunter who added 9 points, 13 rebound and six assists. Charlie Tailfeathers added 15 points.

Sunburst, which lost to Heart Butte for the fourth time this season, was led by senior Treyton Pickering with 20 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists. Jeff Owens scored 17 for the Refiners.

Though the Refiners made it to the title game, they will have to fight for their seed at the state tournament. Belt defeated Chinook 45-37 in the consolation final for the right to challenge Sunburst for the North’s second seed at state, Saturday at 5 p.m.
