BILLINGS – Billings Public Schools announced Wednesday that former Montana State University Billings volleyball and women’s basketball all-star Monica Grimsrud was named the head volleyball coach at Billings West High School.
Grimsrud recently finished her second season as the junior varsity coach for the Golden Bears, and took over as the interim head coach with two games remaining in the 2017 season after the resignation of former head coach Kelly Deming. BWHS went on to go 4-2 under Grimsrud’s leadership at the end of 2017, including capturing its first state playoff win since the 2012 season.
Grimsrud attended MSUB from 2011-2016, competing in volleyball from 2011-2014 and women’s basketball from 2011-2016 with a redshirt season in 2013-14. Grimsrud finished her career as a spiker No. 3 in MSUB history with 1,361 kills, and No. 2 in career attempts with 3,901. The Helena, Mont., native played in 387 sets in her career, which is ninth-most in Yellowjacket history as well. She earned first-team all-Great Northwest Athletic Conference honors as an outside hitter after her junior season in 2013.
On the basketball court, Grimsrud was an honorable mention all-GNAC selection after her senior year in 2015-16. Grimsrud helped the Yellowjackets reach the NCAA Division II west region championships, averaging 10.1 points per game and 4.1 rebounds per game.
Grimsrud resides in Billings and is a kindergarten teacher at McKinley Elementary School.
