Grovom’s 14 lead Helena Capital boys past crosstown rival Helena High

HELENA — Bridger Grovom had a game-high 14 points and Helena Capital held on for a key crosstown win over Helena High 37-33 on Saturday evening. The Bruins completed a regular-season sweep over the rival Bengals.

Grovom was the only Capital player to reach double digits, hitting four 3-pointers and a pair of free throws for Guy Almquist’s club. Parker Johnston added seven in the win.

Capital (5-11 overall, 3-6 Western AA) had chances to put the game out of reach late in the fourth quarter, but the Bruins missed five free throws in the final minutes, keeping the Bengals in the game. Helena High (4-12, 2-8) missed a pair of go-ahead 3-pointers in the last minute of the game.

Connor Murgel and Alex Johnson each knocked down two 3-pointers in the first quarter, giving the Bengals a 14-8 advantage. Murgel finished with a team-high 11 points in the loss. His 3-pointer in the second period, his third of the game, helped Helena High take a 21-20 lead at halftime.

But Capital limited the Bengals to three third-quarter points, taking a 27-24 advantage into the final eight minutes. Eight of the Bruins’ 10 points in overtime came from the charity stripe.
