POCATELLO, Idaho — Carter Hughes looks primed to defend his Class A shot put and discuss state championships.

The Sidney junior placed second in the weight throw at the Simplot Games, one of the nation’s premier high school indoor track and field events, on Thursday. It was the first time the self-taught Hughes competed in the event, as it’s not included in the Montana High School Association field events.

Hughes marked a throw of 62 feet, 1.25 inches to earn the second-place finish. Trey Knight, a sophomore from Ridgefield, Wash., won with a throw of 80-05.50.

Hughes helped Sidney to the Class A team title at last year’s state track and field meet in Laurel. He won the shot put with a mark of 54-02 and the discus with a throw of 169-06.

Hughes will also compete in the shot put at the Simplot Games.
