BELGRADE — The best athletes are simply not phased by “the big moment.”
Dawson Fowler further proved his spot among Montana’s top athletes, as what was meant to be a night all about him ended up really being all about him. The senior was honored before Belgrade’s boys basketball game against Jefferson with a ball commemorating his becoming the first basketball player in school history to officially score 1,000 career points.
He responded by scoring 27 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer as time expired to lift his team to a 65-62 victory on Monday.
In reflecting on his impressive feat, even the kid who calmly won the game at the buzzer for Belgrade didn’t see it coming.
“I thought I was a decent player, but I never thought I would be who I am,” he said of his talent coming into high school. “I worked hard, but, coming in, I never thought I would be at that milestone.”
After Monday night’s performance, Fowler sits at 1,073 points and owns seemingly every statistical offensive record there is to own at Belgrade. But the impacts of his four years suiting up for the Panthers have not yet hit him.
“Once I get older, I think I’ll appreciate it a lot more than I have,” he said. “I’m still trying to get through the rest of the season — we’re trying to go get some trophies to finish out this season.”
