Girls basketball power polls: Missoula Sentinel climbs to No. 1 ranking

Games went largely as expected on Montana’s high school girls basketball courts last week. In fact, there were no changes in the MontanaSports.com power polls in three of the four classifications.

Class AA saw a big shakeup, though, as defending champion Helena High suffered its first two losses of the season. The Bengals lost an overtime thriller to crosstown rival Helena Capital on Tuesday and then lost at Missoula Sentinel on Thursday.

The Spartans, who many considered the preseason favorite, then traveled to Helena to hand Capital its first loss on Saturday. With the wins, Sentinel leap-frogged both Helena schools to nab Class AA’s No. 1 ranking.

Teams in the other classifications spent the week further solidifying themselves as worthy title contenders. Havre, Three Forks and Box Elder kept their undefeated records intact to maintain their holds on the top rankings in Classes A, B and C, respectively. Havre and Three forks are the only remaining undefeated teams remaining their respective classes, while Class C still features five undefeated teams — Box Elder, Belt, Savage, Harlowton and Alberton-Superior. Ennis edged Alberton-Superior for the fifth spot in the Class C power poll.
