POWER — The Power Pirates girls have been playing inspired basketball recently. The Lady Pirates (3-5) are coming off a 65-14 win against Sunburst and a 71-24 win against Augusta.

The player making the most noise is junior Jessie Maruska. Maruska had 26 points against Sunburst and a whopping 38 points against Augusta, which is the second-highest point total in the entire state so far this season.

Despite her stature — Maruska stands just 5-foot-1 — she’s been able to find this scoring success. Yet Maruska remains a humble leader and has confidence in her team.

“It’s all in the teamwork,” she said. “If we see somebody open, we have to trust our teammates to make the easy buckets, and we hustle down the floor pretty well. We have to keep our spirits high. We can compete with every team in the district, we’ve just got to believe that and work hard. We work together as a team, we condition a lot, but I think it just comes down to hard work.”
