LIBBY – The Eureka and Libby-Troy wrestling programs were so evenly matched Tuesday evening, the clubs had to go to a ninth tiebreaker to determine a dual winner. The Loggers broke a 25-25 score by owning the most near falls in the match.
The dual opened at 145 pounds where Jeffery Offenbecher earned a 12-4 major decision against Eureka’s Izaac Petz. The Loggers added to their lead with a third-period pin from Dawson Young, who took down Nathan Cargill in 5:38. Libby-Troy took a 10-0 lead.
Eureka won four of the next five matches, beginning with James Fehr defeating Tim Carvey in a 9-2 decision. Top-ranked wrestlers Jonathan Schmidt and Garrett Graves won at 170 and 182, Schmidt a 9-0 major decision and Graves a 38-second pin. After Gabe Van Orden’s fall at 205 pounds, the Lions’ heavyweight Sam Johnson edged Cyrus Sweedman 5-4.
Each team forfeited at 103 pounds, with Buddy Doolin and Zack Morrison earning three points each for Libby-Troy at 113 and 120. Nathan Schmidt and Hank Dunn won consecutive matches to tie the match at 22-all. Hank Dunn’s win over Trey Thompson at 132 gave Eureka the brief lead, but Cody Crace’s 7-2 decision in the final match set the scoreboard to 25-25.
