State AA volleyball: Helena Capital returns to championship match

BOZEMAN -- The champs are back.

Helena Capital, which won the 2018 Class AA state championship, will look to repeat on Saturday after downing Great Falls CMR 19-25, 25-14, 25-15, 25-14 in the undefeated semifinal of the 2018 Class AA state volleyball tournament on Friday at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.

Paige and Dani Bartsch were sensational yet again, with Paige landing 13 kills, six blocks and four aces and Dani adding 19 kills and 13 digs. Audrey Hofer had 37 assists in the win, and Sarah Ashley recorded 14 kills and three aces.

Allie Olsen had 16 kills, five blocks and two aces for CMR, which will now play Bozeman or Helena High in Saturday's third-place match at 10 a.m. The winner of that match will meet Capital in the championship at noon.

Helena High def. Bozeman 16-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-17 (Bozeman gets fourth place)

Liz Heuiser had 18 kills and Caroline Bullock added 12 as Helena High earned a 16-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-17 win over Bozeman in the fourth-place match of the Class AA state volleyball tournament on Friday at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.

Heuiser added eight blocks and three aces, while Emily Feller contributed 38 assists and three aces in the win. The Bengals will next play Great Falls CMR in the third-place match at 10 a.m. Saturday. The winner will meet Helena Capital for the state championship at noon.

Bozeman's season came to end with the loss to Helena High. JoJo Radick had a team0high 14 kills.

Helena High def. Billings West 25-27, 20-25, 25-22, 25-16, 15-9

Liz Heuiser filled the stat sheet with 16 kills, six blocks, two aces and 20 digs to help Helena High advance in the consolation bracket Friday at the Class AA state volleyball tournament at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. The Bengals rallied past Billings West 25-27, 20-25, 25-22, 25-16, 15-9 in loser-out action.

Abby Marcille added 15 kills for the Bengals, who also got 39 assists and five blocks from Emily Feller. Brooke Ark and Aubrie Christman each contributed two aces, and Haydin Henschel added 20 digs. The Bengals will next play Bozeman in Class AA's fourth-place match at 8 p.m. Friday.

Billings West ends its season with the loss. Kaitlin Grossman and Megan Benton each had 10 kills for the Golden Bears, and Shauna Stene had nine kills and 4.5 blocks.

Bozeman def. Billings Senior 25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 25-18

Bozeman won its second match of the day at the Class AA state volleyball tournament Friday, defeating Billings Senior 25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 25-18 in a loser-out match at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.

The Hawks rolled to the win behind strong performances from Sasha Hathaway and JoJo Raddick. Hathaway had 13 kills and seven aces, both of which were match-highs. Raddick added 12 kills and two aces, while Emma Fox contributed 38 assists, two aces and eight digs.

Bozeman will next play Billings West or Helena High in Class AA's fourth-place match at 8 p.m. Friday.

Senior, which upset Helena High in Thursday's first round, sees its season end after consecutive losses. Olivia LaBeau had eight kills and three aces on Friday, while Hailie George finished with 21 digs and two aces.

Helena High def. Butte 25-22, 25-19, 25-21

Elizabeth Heuiser had 16 kills and six blocks, while Emily Feller chipped in with 31 assists, 12 digs and an ace as Helena High bounced back from its Thursday loss to Billings Senior to sweep Butte 25-22, 25-19, 25-21 on Friday in loser-out action at the Class AA state volleyball tournament at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.

Heuiser played the lead role in Helena's offensive attack, which finished with 40 kills and 35 assists. Abby Marcille added nine kills for the Bengals, who also got 16 digs from Haydin Henschel.

Helena High moves on to face Billings West at 4 p.m. in an elimination game.

Brooke and Grace McGrath led Butte in its final game of the season. Brooke posted eight kills and 10 digs, while Grace added 19 assists and an ace. Trisha Ericson led the Bulldogs with 12 digs, while Emma Field posted a team-high four blocks in the defeat.

Bozeman def. Missoula Sentinel 25-12, 19-25, 26-24, 25-23

The hometown Bozeman Hawks kept their season alive Friday morning with a four-set victory over Missoula Sentinel at the Class AA state volleyball tournament. The Hawks defeated the Spartans 25-12, 19-25, 26-24, 25-23.

Sasha Hathaway had 19 kills and five aces, Kamryn Larson added 12 kills, and Emma Fox had all 50 of the team's assists to go with eight digs and two aces. Senior Peyton Wimmer collected six blocks for Bozeman's defense, which also got four blocks from Ryan Eddins.

Bozeman advances in the consolation bracket and will face Billings Senior at 2 p.m.

Missoula Sentinel finished its 2019 season with a 12-13 record. The Spartans got nine kills from seniors Sheridan Schweyen and eight from Alexis Umland. Fellow senior Olivia Cady ended her prep career with 11 digs and four aces. Paige Sawyer had 18 assists in the loss.

Helena High swept Butte in the second loser-out match on Friday.
