Rocky Mountain College sweeps Briar Cliff in home openers

BILLINGS – The Rocky Mountain College soccer teams opened their 2018 home seasons Saturday with a sweep of Briar Cliff at Herb Klindt Field.

The Battlin’ Bears women earned a 4-1 victory in the first game of the double-header, while the men pulled out a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

The women’s match was close throughout the first half, until Rocky’s Shasta Grant scored in the 29th minute with an assist from Rita Marshall.

Rocky would begin a streak of goals after halftime. Emily Browne scored a goal of her own in the 75th minute. Lauryn Gamache quickly followed two minutes later with a goal off another assist fro mMarshall. Then Mhari Smith found the back of the net in the 79th minute with an assist from Hannah Borgel. Briar Cliff would score their only goal of the night in the 89th minute.

The men were scoreless late in the first half, when each team tallied in quick succession. Rocky’s Tulio Melo found the back of the net in the 41st minute, with an assist from Marco Kummerle. The Chargers’ Prichard Sibanda tied it up one minute later.

But it was Rocky was got the late winner, as Kummerle fed Gregor Watson in the 79th minute.

Both Rocky teams are back at home Monday against Mid-America Christian. The women kick off at 11:00 a.m., while the men follow at 1:00 p.m. Both games will be played at Wendy’s Field.
