Montana State-Northern’s Isaac Bartel has been named the Cascade Collegiate Conference’s Red Lion men’s wrestler of the week, the league announced Monday.

Bartel, the second-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds, went 5-0 at the Missouri Valley Invitational to take first place. The sophomore out of Mason City, Iowa, took down three nationally ranked opponents on his way to the individual title.

Bartel opened his tournament with a 22-5 technical fall over Maleek Caton of Williams Baptist (Arkansas) and then earned a 12-4 major decision of Jeremiah Glise of Briar Cliff (Iowa). Bartel took down his first ranked opponent, No. 16 Bruce Valdez of Menlo (Calif.), with an 11-4 decision.

On the invite’s second day, Bartel scored wins over Oscar Martinez of Indiana Tech and David Dow of Baker (Kan.). Bartel beat the 11th-ranked Martinez 5-1 before taking down Dow, ranked third, 7-6 in the championship.

Bartel’s performance helped MSU-Northern to a 10th-place team finish at the Missouri Valley Invitational.

The Lights are back in action on Thursday, hosting Dickinson (N.D.) State at the Armory Gymnasium.
