DILLON — The No. 8 Carroll College Fighting Saints got their biggest win of the season, going on the road to defeat No. 3 Montana Western 55-50 in Dillon on Thursday night.

Though Western claimed the regular season series 2-1, the win keeps the Saints firmly in second place in the Frontier Conference. Carroll (17-7, 9-4) becomes just the second team this season to defeat Montana Western (20-2, 11-2).

Carroll broke through against Western in the teams’ third meeting. In the previous two, the Saints started slow and slogged through the first half. This time, Carroll was ready out of the gate and kept pace with Western, trailing 30-28 at halftime.

In a physical game, the Saints found a way to grab a slight edge in the second half, outscoring the Bulldogs in the third and fourth quarter to hold on for a win.

Christine Denny led the Saints with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Hannah Dean added 12 points, six rebounds and two blocks.

Brianna King led Western with 17 points on 6-for-16 shooting.

Western had a look at a game-tying three with three seconds left, but it missed the mark. Denny added two late free throws to give the Saints their five-point win.

The Saints outrebounded the Bulldogs 37-35, translating every narrow advantage into points on the board.
