HELENA – The Carroll College women’s basketball team knew it had at least a portion of the Frontier Conference regular-season championship after its 67-54 victory over the University of Providence last weekend. But Thursday night the Carroll women locked down the title outright with a 49-42 win over Lewis-Clark State.
Rachelle Sayers and the No. 11 Fighting Saints cut down the P.E. Center nets following the win over the Warriors, the defending NAIA runners-up. It was the first Frontier Conference title in the regular season for Sayers, who earned homecourt advantage throughout the upcoming Frontier Conference playoffs.
“I couldn’t be more proud of this team,” Sayers said. “They have been so committed and worked so hard. They are completely bought in. It’s been an amazing year. We are having a lot of fun and still working hard to get better every day. We don’t have long to enjoy this one, but it feels great to know we were able to wrap things up tonight.”
Michaela Dowdy and Taylor Salonen led the Saints with 10 points each, while Salonen hauled in a team-high nine rebounds in the win.
Carroll welcomes rival Montana Western to Helena for the regular-season finale on Saturday. The game is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.
