Rocky Mountain College escape battle with Montana State-Northern

HAVRE – The 12th-ranked Rocky Mountain College women’s basketball team avoided consecutive losses for the first time this season after pulling out a 58-55 win over Montana State-Northern on Saturday night at Armory Gymnasium.

Rocky (21-5, 11-5 Frontier) survived the defensive struggle to claim a season sweep of MSU-Northern (10-17, 2-14). The Battlin’ Bears shot just 37.0 percent in the game, but they grabbed 10 offensive rebounds for eight second chance points.

Four Rocky players scored in double figures with Markaela Francis leading the way with 13 points. Mikayla Jones finished with 12 points and Justyn Juhl added 11 without missing on her four shot attempts, including three 3-pointers.

The Sky Lights shot 48.9 percent and had 34 points in the paint. Rocky forced them into 11 turnovers, which resulted in nine points for the Battlin’ Bears. Rocky also held a 13-0 edge in bench scoring.

Hailee Farstveet added 10 points and eight assists in the win.

Tiara Gilham led Northern with 20 points.

The win keeps Rocky tied with Montana Western for second in the Frontier standings with two games to play. The teams are two games behind Carroll for the lead. Rocky will host Western in the Fortin Education Center on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
