HELENA – After 24 years of leading the Helena High football team, head coach Tony Arntson put in his resignation letter Thursday afternoon to begin the next chapter of his coaching career. Luckily for Carroll College, that next chapter is as an assistant football coach for the Fighting Saints.
“It’s great. He’s Tony Arntson, who’s a very successful high school coach. He’s had some offers to go coach at the college ranks, so to get him here, he’s here in town, I think that’s going to be great for our football team,” Carroll head coach Mike Van Diest told MTN Sports. “I know our players will like him. I think he’s going to be a great addition to go with Nick Howlett and the offensive staff, and to work with Tony day in, day out is going to be a real plus for our football team.”
“He knows offense very well. I think he’s a terrific offensive mind,” Van Diest continued. “The other thing, and my sons played for him, I think his coach-player relationship is big-time, so I think that’s going to help us. Certainly losing Jim (Hogan) in the state of Montana, Tony’s going to step right in there recruiting in Montana. He knows these high school coaches. He’s coached a lot of their players at these different all-star games, whether it was the East-West Shrine game or the MonDak game. I think Tony is going to step right in and we’re going to be fine with Tony.”
