HELENA -- Goals by Rory Bloy and Jeronimo Huerta powered the Carroll College Fighting Saints men’s soccer team past Northwest, 2-1, on Sunday at Nelson Stadium.

The Saints (3-2-1, 2-0 CCC) opened up the Cascade Collegiate Conference season with a pair of home victories, having defeated Evergreen on Friday, 1-0.

“We’re quite ecstatic that we’re now 2-0,” Saints coach Doug Mello said. “We didn’t expect anything less. We’re at home. We’ve given two good efforts. We’re excited to into next weekend and carry on.”

Bloy put the Saints up early when he unleashed a high-quality rip into the back of the net in the seventh minute.

“Today, you saw Roy give another superlative goal,” Mello said.

The Saints padded their lead in the first half after Huerta unleashed a flurry of shots toward the goal, finishing a rebounder to give the Saints a 2-0 lead.

“Jero always seems to sneak a chip on the goalie that puts us in good shape,” Mello said.

The Saints played a much more defensive effort in the second half and for the most part held up very well and made big stops.

“Midfield-wise, Santi (Morazzani), Nick (Lowrimore) played well so did Leo (Georgiades) and Keegan in the middle. They won a lot of balls. Kaden (Connor) had a couple good saves. That’s the thing. We bent but didn’t break. We always have a tough hard, felt battle with Northwest.”

The Eagles broke through when Elliot Misic finished a cross from Tyler Hopp.

Northwest (3-4, 0-2 CCC) outshot the Saints 15-14.

Connor made five saves on the day.

Next week the Saints head to Oregon to face Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech.
