BUTTE – Montana Tech head cross country coach Zach Kughn announced his first addition for 2021 with local runner Hailey Nielson on Friday.

“Hailey is all you could ask for in a recruit, a 4.0 student whose passion for the sport really shines through," said Kughn. "She has been a big part of the Butte running community for many years now and she shares the same passion as me in seeing that community grow.”

Nielson, a Butte High senior, has run cross country and track for the Bulldogs the past three years. She was an all-conference selection in the 3,200-meter run in 2019 and qualified for state.

“Having her transition from being a Butte High athlete to a Tech athlete will allow the community to continue to follow her and support our program," Kughn said. "There are many young women (and men) coming through the Butte High and Central middle and high school running programs right now who want to be where Hailey is in a few years. I’m excited to have Hailey join us and for her to be our first signee for the class of 2021 make it all the more special.”

Nielson, the daughter of Valerie and Tim, plans on pursuing a degree in Biochemistry.
