SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday announced they have waived wide receiver and return specialist Junior Bergen as part of several roster moves.
Bergen was a seventh round pick of the 49ers (No. 252 overall) in the 2025 NFL Draft. He spent the entire 2025 season on the practice squad, and later signed a reserve/future contract with the team on Jan. 20 of this year.
Bergen was one of three players waived by the 49ers on Wednesday in order to make room for new roster additions in cornerback Eli Apple, defensive lineman Xavier Thomas and running back Zamir White.
Bergen was drafted by the 49ers out of the University of Montana, where he stood out as a return specialist. He finished his career with eight punt return touchdowns, tied for the most in FCS history. His average yards per punt return was 16.71, which set a program record.
The 5-foot-11, 184-pound Bergen ended his Griz career with 4,468 all-purpose yards, sixth-most in program history. He had 1,760 career receiving yards, placing him in the top 25 in the UM record book.
Bergen starred on the high school gridiron at Billings Senior, and became the first Broncs alum to be drafted after Pete Lazetich in the second round by the Chargers in 1972.
