MSU Billings women place 7th at Pioneer Shootout

OAKLAND, Calif. – Finishing its opening event of the 2021 spring season at Corica Park South Course on Tuesday, the Montana State University Billings women’s golf team took seventh place at the Pioneer Shootout.

The Yellowjackets shot a team score of 677 in the two-round event, following Monday’s 327 with a mark of 350 on Tuesday.

Tierney Messmer was the Yellowjackets’ top finisher, as she tied for 18th place among the field of 40 players with a two-round score of 163 (84-79). Messmer cut off five strokes between her two rounds at the event, finishing on Tuesday with a 7-over-par 79. Messmer started the day off on the right foot, playing the front-nine at just 1-over-par 37. She finished the tournament with a pair of birdies on Tuesday, giving her three total in the event.

Avery Gill finished in 26th place for the ‘Jackets, posting a two-round total of 167 (80-87). Gill wound up shooting an 87 her second time through the course on Tuesday, making seven pars throughout her round.

Senior Sydney Rochford tied for 33rd place at the event, with a two-round score of 171 (83-88). Rochford managed a birdie in each round, including a stroke saved on the par-4, 358-yard ninth hole on Tuesday.

Kinsey Irvin finished in 36th place for MSUB, taking a two-round score of 176 (80-96). Jill Frye also competed for MSUB in her first event as a Yellowjacket, and took 39th place with a two-round score of 197 (100-97).

Anahi Servin of Academy of Art and Claire Shubin of Dominican University tied for first place at the event, each shooting a final score of 144. Shubin’s Penguins won the team title with a two-round total of 614 (305-309), as they held off second-place Biola University by nine strokes.

THE BUZZ: Messmer was named the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Day.

COMING UP: The MSUB women are in action next week, with the Northwest Nazarene University Invitational set for March 8-9 at Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore, Calif.
