Miles Community College men, women sweep doubleheader

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. -- The Miles Community College men's and women's basketball teams earned a doubleheader sweep over Lake Region State College on Wednesday.

Akeemis Williams, a 5-foot-9 sophomore guard, knocked down 12 3-point field goals en route to a career-high 36 points to help lead the MCC men to an 83-72 win. Miles knocked down 20 of 45 3-point attempts on the night agains LRSC zone defense. Jakim Ricketts added four 3-point field goals for 12 points.

Gedeon Buzangu added another double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Jayvon Lewis came off the bench to score 11 points to go along with eight assists. Issac Abergut had nine rebounds and six assists.

Lake Region, which got a team-high 26 points and 12 rebounds from Dion Ford, led by as many as 12 points in the first half before MCC rallied behind the hot shooting of Williams and Ricketts to take a 40-38 halftime lead. The Pioneers stretched the lead to as many as 15 late in the second half.

The MCC women, meanwhile, pulled away in the second half for an 83-69 win over LRSC. The Pioneers led 37-35 at halftime but outscored the Royals by five points in the third quarter and seven in the fourth.

Binta Salwu led four Pioneers in double figures with 26 points on 9-of-19 shooting. She five 3-pointers in the win and added eight assists and six rebounds. Olyvia Pacheco (20 points, nine rebounds), Claire Borot (17 points, nine rebounds) and Lili Long (11 points) also finished in double digits. As a team, MCC made 29 of 65 field goal attempts, 11 of 26 3-point attempts and 14 of 16 free throw attempts.

Kayla Bryne led LRSC with 16 points off the bench.
