MANHATTAN -- Manhattan’s Lane Veltkamp didn’t miss a beat in his return for the Tigers. After sitting out the last game with a knee injury, Veltkamp threw for 179 yards and three touchdowns against Townsend.
“It felt great, especially being gone last week, it was great to be back," said Veltkamp. “I’m working my way back up there, I wouldn’t say I’m 100 percent yet. Hopefully by playoffs I’ll be back up there.”
Even a little banged up, Veltkamp has been dominant all season long. The senior has scored 20 total touchdowns in his six games. But he knows his success comes from his teammates.
“We’ve just been playing great and our o-line has just been tremendous this year. I give all the credit to those guys, because they can open up the run game and give pass game time,” Veltkamp said.
With the senior signal caller leading the charge, the 7-0 Tigers have a chance to clinch the Southern B conference title with a win Friday against Jefferson.
“There’s a lot of pressure there, but I think we can get it done," Veltkamp said heading into the game with the Panthers. "We’ve been practicing really hard and we are going to keep putting in the work this week and hopefully come out with a win and get that conference title.”
But the Tigers won’t be satisfied with just that. They have had trouble at state, making it to the quarterfinals multiple years in a row before being bounced out. But this year is different.
“7-0 just couldn’t be any better," he smiled. "It just shows how much work we’ve put in and how hard we’ve been working in the regular season so far. But we always want to go for it all.”
Manhattan hits the road to face Jefferson 7 p.m. on Friday.
