COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Cougars scored with just more than a minute to play to stun visiting Glasgow 28-24 in the opening round of the Class B state football playoffs on Saturday in Columbus. Cougars tailback Trey Johannes plunged into the end zone from 3 yards out for his fourth touchdown of the day to give Columbus the lead late.

Glasgow held an 8-0 lead at halftime after a Jesse Lee 1-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter. The Scotties had an opportunity to extend their lead to open the second half but fumbled the kickoff. That led to a 5-yard scoring run by Johannes that tied things up, 8-8.

The Scotties answered back quickly, as a huge run by quarterback Alec Boland set Glasgow up inside the Columbus 10-yard line. Three plays later, Boland crossed the goal line to put Glasgow up 16-8. Johannes' second touchdown of the day tied the game up, and Glasgow again fumbled the kickoff, setting Columbus up deep in Glasgow territory.

Johannes scored his third touchdown of the day seconds into the fourth quarter, giving Columbus a 22-16 lead after the PAT was blocked. Glasgow methodically drove down the field and Lee punctuated the drive with a 10-yard run to tie the game. Boland kept the two-point conversion himself to give the Scotties a 24-22 lead with 6:12 to play.

The Columbus ground attack couldn't be stopped in the second half, though, as the Cougars ate up precious time off the clock on their final drive. Johannes' 3-yard score left Glasgow with little time to drive down the field, and the Columbus defense held to push the Cougars into the Class B quarterfinals.

Columbus will visit Eureka in the quarterfinals, as the top seed from the Western B ran past Baker on Saturday, 65-24. Glasgow's seasons comes to a close at 5-4.
