SUNBURST — The Geraldine-Highwood defense stood tall Friday night, helping the Rivals to a thrilling 34-32 win at 6-Man North rival Sunburst.
Ian Schabarker connected with Bryce Birgenheir on a 6-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter that the gave the Rivals the lead, and their defense made a game-saving goal-line stand in the final minutes to secure the win.
Schabarker had two touchdown passes in the win, also hooking up with Orrin Harris for a 9-yard score in the third quarter. The Rivals also got two touchdown runs from Ian Moline and another from Liam Laws in what was a back-and-forth game the entire way.
Moline gave Geraldine-Highwood a 6-0 lead in the first quarter, but Sunburst answered with a 38-yard TD run from Stanley Jarvis. Moline gave the lead back to the Rivals in the second quarter with his second touchdown, but the Refiners again answered when Jaden Koon ran 55 yards for another score.
Laws and Sunburst’s Cade Hanson traded touchdowns later in the second as Geraldine-Highwood took a 22-20 lead into the halftime break.
The teams alternated scoring drives in the second half. For Sunburst, Jarvis added another long scoring run and Hanson found Grady Kerfoot for a short TD in the fourth quarter.
