BOZEMAN — The Montana State golf team completed its 2019-20 schedule which will feature nine tournaments ahead of the Big Sky Golf Championship, head coach Brittany Basye announced on Thursday, July 11.

The Bobcats are slated to play in four tournaments during the fall portion of their schedule. MSU plays host to the Battle at Old Works in Anaconda to begin its season on Sept. 16. The meet takes place at Old Works Golf Course for the third straight season.

“We’re super excited about that event,” Basye said. “The golf course is amazing and allows us to play on our home front. Old Works allows us to not have to travel too far. I also think it’s nice with four seniors on the team to be able to acknowledge them at a home event. We’ve added a couple new teams from California and then we have a few teams returning, so I think it will be a great tournament.”

Montana State will return to a past tournament when the Bobcats tee off at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic on Sept. 23 in Fort Collins, Colo. They travel to Aurora, Ore., for the Rose City Collegiate which takes place from Sept. 30-Oct. 1. Montana hosts the Griz Match Play Challenge in Missoula on Oct. 4 which serves as Montana State’s final tournament of the fall slate.

“The Colorado State tournament is a really good one to get back into,” Basye said. “We’ve played it in the past and I think it’s important to stay in the region. It’s fun to get back into Colorado to play a great golf course against a strong field. It’ll be new for all the girls.

“We’ve tried to stay close to home to manage schedules. I think in Missoula we’ll play match play, so that’ll mix it up a little bit. It leaves a lot of time open in October to work on things individually we don’t get to work on in the spring.”

The Bobcats make their 2020 debut in Phoenix, Ariz., competing from Feb. 22-23 at the Grand Canyon Invitational. MSU participates in two tournaments in March. The ‘Cats play in Hawaii at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational on March 10 and travel to Fresno, Calif., for the Fresno State Classic to close out the month.

MSU tees off at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on April 6 in Maricopa, the first of three tournaments in Arizona in April. The Bobcat Desert Classic returns on April 13 when MSU hosts the meet for the sixth time over a two-day span at the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear.

“The goal is to play right before conference,” Basye said. “We stacked that on purpose because the last couple of years we haven’t been able to get outside in Bozeman in the spring. We wanted to be in Arizona right before conference to get use to the weather, the grass and get some practice in ahead of the Big Sky tournament.”

The Big Sky Championship changes venues for its 2020 edition. The conference field will compete over a three-day span at the Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale. The meet begins on April 20 and features all 11 conference members. Montana State finished sixth at the 2019 Big Sky Championship in Boulder City, Nev.

“For the girls, they get a chance to golf at a new venue which is exciting,” Basye said. “We’ll have some momentum because we’d have made the swing through Arizona.

“The thing about Talking Stick is it is brand new and it’s not a desert course. We’ll have to prepare our games a little different. It may create some challenges, but the expectations might be a little better because we don’t know what to expect. Scottsdale is kind of our home away from home, so it should be a fun opportunity for us.”
