BOZEMAN — The 2019 National Signing Day brought up a passionate subject for Montana State head coach Jeff Choate on Wednesday: the NCAA transfer portal.

“We should not make it easy to quit because guess what happens to quitters? After they’ve done it once? Anybody?” Choate said to the crowd. “They do it again. We’re giving these kids an opportunity, by in large, a lot of them are on scholarships. They’re not positioned to make a decision that’s going to affect the rest of their life in a negative fashion because they don’t like that it’s cold outside for a couple months.

“I just think that we’ve got to do something to make it a little more challenging to challenge kids to look at and say, ‘Hey, push through this adversity.’ There’s so much value in that, right? Where’s the value in quitting?”
