Montana Grizzlies will agonize over game tape from Portland State loss

MISSOULA – The Homecoming party in Missoula turned to stunned silence after a 52-yard field goal by Cody Williams led to a shocking 22-20 Portland State victory over Montana on Saturday.

Montana’s offense didn’t do much right all day. The Grizzlies had only 55 yards at halftime and turned the ball over four times. Some coaches want to throw away a game tape that looks like this one, but Bobby Hauck can’t wait to watch it.

“This is not going to be easy to just forget,” said the head coach. “And I don’t believe in forgetting it. I believe in suffering through it and going back and reviewing it. You hear coaches sometimes, ‘Oh, we’re going to throw that game film out.’ Nonsense. We are going to go back and we’re all watching it in depth together, and we’re going to correct the things we didn’t do well enough. We’re going to be absolutely ill when we watch this thing (Sunday).”

Hauck does not find silver linings in a loss, but he did admit that all of the problems on Saturday were execution. He liked the way his Grizzlies played with heart and effort, and they will need that in practice this week as they prepare for a trip to North Dakota.
