OGDEN, Utah – For the second straight week, the Big Sky Conference has had two football players earn FCS STATS National Player of the Week honors. Montana junior linebacker Dante Olson was named the defensive player of the week, while Weber State’s Josh Davis earned freshman player of the week honors.
Montana’s Olson has been dominant on defense for the Griz in their first two games. Olson backed up his Week 1 performance with a stellar 16 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble, a pass breakup, and two sacks. The junior’s 16 tackles are a Big Sky single-game best this season. Olson and the Griz defeated Drake, 48-16. Nationally, Olson is tied for third in the FCS with a total of 29 tackles, and leads the Big Sky in average tackles per game with 14.5. He also leads the Big Sky and is tied for sixth nationally in sacks with three total at an average of 1.5 per game.
Davis made work of his first career start, as he helped guide Weber State to a 24-17 road win at Cal Poly. The redshirt freshman had a career-high 23 carries for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Davis scored a 3-yard touchdown in the first quarter and added a 5-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. His longest rush of the day was 60 yards. Davis’ 177 rushing yards was the most by a Wildcat running back since C.J. Tuckett in 2012.
