State AA Softball: Great Falls High rolls, Helena Capital hangs on during Day 1

HELENA – The Class AA state softball tournament started at Batch Fields on Thursday.

Great Falls High, the Eastern AA’s undefeated No. 1 seed, went up against Helena High, the No. 4 seed out of the West, in the first round. The Bison were helped by the steady pitching of senior Erin Hocker and overcame the Bengals 6-2. Great Falls High will play Missoula Sentinel, which defeated Butte in Thursday’s first round, in the quarterfinals at 10 a.m. Friday.

Helena Capital, the Western AA’s top seed, went up against two-time defending state champion Great Falls CMR, which entered the tournament as the East’s No. 4 seed. The Rustlers jumped oiut to an early 2-0 lead, but a Bruin hit parade led by April Davis, Taylor Mathews and others helped Capital rally for a 10-7 victory. Capital will play Billings Senior, which defeated Kalispell Glacier on Thursday, in the quarterfinals at 10 a.m. Friday.
