BUTTE — The defense might have won Friday’s scrimmage at Montana Tech, but the two sides of the ball are providing plenty of excitement this spring.

“The offense had the upper hand yesterday at practice, so we challenged the defensive guys to come out and fly around a little bit,” said head coach Chuck Morrell.

The two sides battling makes for a happy head coach early in the season.

“I love it when there’s a give-and-take,” he explained. “When the offense is up one day and the defense is up the next day, that’s the sign of a good football team.”

The defense was able to halt an aggressive rushing attack, while getting to the quarterbacks and forcing turnovers through the air. Two weeks into spring ball, Tech looks to be getting their feet under them.

“That’s why we scrimmaged today, because it’s an initial lesson to our guys about the different personnel groups and packages that we’re going to be in,” Morrell said. “The communication piece of it is very critical for guys to be on and off the field, so I think that was a big aspect that we were trying to teach out there today.”
