DENVER, Colo. (Jan. 19, 2018) — When a barrel racer has a run that is a full tenth of a second faster than the rest of the field, rodeo fans take notice.

That was certainly the case at the sixteenth performance of the National Western Stock Show Rodeo on Friday night. Barrel racing sensation Hailey Kinsel, from Cotulla, Texas, took her great palomino mare that she calls Sister around the cloverleaf pattern in 15.18 seconds. She now has claimed the fastest run of the whole rodeo and took the lead in the first round.

The barrel racing is timed in hundredths of a second. Jennifer Barrett from Buhl, Idaho is in second place in the first round with a 15.28-second run. Kinsel, who qualified for her first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo last December in Las Vegas is anxious to get back there again this year and compete for a world championship.

She finished as the reserve world champion last year with $288,092 in season earnings with the bulk of that coming from Las Vegas. Kinsel who also won the championship at the College National Finals last June in Casper, Wyo., will make her second run her on Saturday morning. Another solid performance will qualify her for Sunday’s U.S. Bank Championship Finals.

Shane Hanchey tied the arena record last night in the tie-down roping with a 6.9-second run. He roped again here on Friday afternoon and took the overall lead after stopping the clock in 8.4 seconds. His total of 15.6 gives him a lead of four-tenths of a second over the rest of the field.

There are three performances of the rodeo in the Denver Coliseum on Saturday at 11 a.m, and 3:30 and 8 p.m. At the conclusion of the Saturday night performance, all preliminary round winners and the U.S. Bank Championship Finals qualifiers will be determined.
