BUTTE — The Montana Tech men’s basketball team had no problem putting away Canada’s Concordia University on Wednesday afternoon. The task was much tougher when the two teams faced off again on Thursday, but the Orediggers pulled away with a 79-68 victory on Thursday.
All five of Tech’s starters scored in double-digits, bu Tech was paced by Jake Miles’ 15 points. Point guard Chris O’Neill added 13 points to go with four rebounds.
Tech scored 98 points on Wednesday, but it was the team’s defense that made the difference down the stretch in what was a tight game for the majority of the second half.
“The last six, seven minutes of the game, we got stop after stop after stop,” explained head coach Adam Hiatt. “I feel like we showed a little bit of grit tonight, which is huge for the growth of our team.”
The Diggers forced 16 turnovers and the Thunder struggled to find the basket down the stretch, allowing the home team to get out to a double-digit lead and secure the sweep.
Montana Tech is now 8-5 on the season, surpassing the team’s win total from last year. Tech begins conference play on January 4 against Montana State-Northern.
