Billings Senior standouts Gabe Sulser and Nolan Askelson were named Montana’s offensive and defensive players of the year by USA Today, which announced its All-USA Montana Football team on Wednesday.
Sulser, who was named the state’s Gatorade player of the year, caught 85 passes for 1,109 yards and 11 touchdowns in helping Billings Senior to its second consecutive undefeated season and Class AA state championship. The future Montana Grizzly also rushed for 997 yards and 16 touchdowns on just 106 carries.
Askelson, who will play at Montana State, recorded 127 tackles (86 solo), including 13 tackles-for-loss and seven sacks, from his linebacker position. He added two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Askelson also served as the Broncs’ starting quarterback during his senior season.
Three other Broncs earned all-USA recognition with junior offensive lineman Garrison Poetzl receiving first-team honors and linebacker Blake Allred and defensive back Ben LaBeau earnings second-team honors.
Trevor Utter of Eureka was named the coach of the year by USA Today after leading the Lions to their second consecutive Class B state championship. Eureka graduated 12 seniors from the 2016 team, but the Lions still finished the 2017 campaign with a perfect 11-0 mark and defeated Shelby 47-7 for the state title.
Lions quarterback Garrett Graves, who will continue his career at Montana, was named the first-team quarterback. Brenton Pluid earned first-team honors at defensive back, as well, for Eureka.
Offensive lineman Gabe Karlin (first team) and defensive lineman Logan Kolodejchuk (second team) of State A champion Columbia Falls were also recognized.
