LAS VEGAS – Round 8 was a good one for Helena steer wrestler Ty Erickson at the National Finals Rodeo. He’s not a world champion yet, but he can see the finish line.

Erickson led top challenger Tyler Pearson by $19,000 in the PRCA world standings, and by 0.4 seconds in the NFR average coming into Thursday night. A 4.4-second run was good enough to split fifth and sixth place – good for $5,500. He also increased his average lead over Pearson, who stumbled to a 5.5.

Erickson leads the average with 34.7 seconds on eight head, while Pearson is at 36.2 seconds on eight.

Wyoming’s Brody Cress was projected to win the saddle bronc title coming into Round 8, but the rookie could only manage an 83.5 aboard Pillow Talk – no round money, and he falls one point behind CoBurn Bradshaw at the top of the average standings.

Cress fell to sixth in the world standings and is no longer projected to win the world, but the top six riders still have a legitimate shot at the title. That’s how bunched the race is with two rounds to go.

Three-time world header champion Clay Tryan earned another round win Thursday, splitting first and second with a 4.1-second run. The Billings cowboy was much happier after Wednesday’s miss.

“I was in bed by 8:30 last night,” Tryan said Thursday. “When you miss, it’s just straight to bed. Tonight, I’ll probably stay up a little bit later – a little better mood. Last night, I was going to come down and see you guys – couldn’t do it. Tonight was a little better. We made a good run and glad to get the win.”

Dustin Bird and Russell Cardoza won Round 2, but a 5.7 left them out of the day money in Round 8.

Wyoming bareback rider J.R. Vezain scored 85 points aboard Pow Wow Nights to split fourth and fifth place – at the moment. A reride is pending Friday.

Circle barrel racer Lisa Lockhart continued her strong NFR with another check in Round 8 – 13.93 was good for fifth, and keeps her at third in the NFR average.
