LAS VEGAS – All eyes in Montana were on Helena’s Ty Erickson Wednesday night.

The World No. 1 steer wrestler is aiming for his first PRCA gold buckle, but it won’t come without a fight. Erickson’s closest threat, Oklahoma cowboy Tyler Pearson, opened Round 7 in 3.6 seconds, which split second and third place money for $18,192.31. So Erickson needed to be 4.8 or quicker to keep his National Finals Rodeo average lead, and he does with a 4.4-second mark.

The 0.4-second lead still puts Erickson right where he wants to be.

“The first couple rounds I was just getting into a speed jam, wanting to win so bad and just getting in a hurry,” Erickson said. “After that, a lot of guys were just telling me to slow down and make your runs. That’s kind of what I’ve been focusing on and it’s been working the last few rounds.”

There’s a new saddle bronc sheriff in town. Wyoming rookie Brody Cress is 21 years old and taking his finals from Tarlteon College this week. By Saturday he’ll have a diploma, and may win his first title.

Cress scored 80 points aboard Hickock in Round 7 to split sixth place money. He still leads the NFR average which is a fat payday if it holds. With three rounds to go, he’s actually projected to win the world title by a little over $1,100.

Wyoming bareback rider J.R. Vezain couldn’t bring in his fourth check of the rodeo after 83 points Wednesday. Neither could three-time world header champion Clay Tryan, who is just chasing round money at this point with no title aspirations. Tryan gambled out of the chute and missed his head. Cut Bank’s Dustin Bird got his, but partner Russell Cardoza only roped one led, leaving them on the outside as well.

Circle native Lisa Lockhart is transitioning her 19-year old horse Chism into retirement. So it’s just Lisa and Louis in Las Vegas, and entering Round 7, they’d only cashed one check. But rolling through her 11th NFR, Lockhart has learned to simply appreciate every moment.

“You wait for that night every night when they call your name and it’s your turn to enter that arena,” Lockhart said. “There’s just no feeling like that. Just competing is what I’m here for – it’s just the name of the game.”

The name of the game Thursday was another paycheck – fourth place for Lisa and Louis in 13.63 seconds.
