HAVRE — After interviewing for the open head coaching position at Montana State-Northern last Friday, Helena High football coach Tony Arntson will be returning to coach the Bengals.

“I’m staying,” Arntson told MTN Sports. “Love it too much here.”

Arntson has been the coach at Helena High for the past 24 seasons, guiding the Bengals to appearances in the Class AA state championship games in 1998, 2001, 2010 and 2017. They lost all four title games, including this year’s 21-12 loss at Billings Senior.

Under Arntson’s tutelage, Helena High has qualified for the State AA playoffs every year since 2005, advancing to at least the semifinal round eight times.

Northern is seeking a head coach after Aaron Christensen resigned on Oct. 25 following a 93-13 loss at Montana Tech. Christensen won just two games, compiling a 2-27 record during his tenure as the Lights’ head coach.

Defensive coordinator Jake Eldridge served as the interim head coach for Northern’s final three games of the season. Eldridge has coached with the Lights for 10 seasons.
