BOZEMAN — The Class AA state volleyball tournament started Thursday morning at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. Eight teams will play as many as 15 matches Thursday, Friday and Saturday, concluding with the championship match at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Helena Capital def. Helena High 25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-8 (fourth-place match)

Sarah Ashley recorded 22 kills and had 26 digs as Helena Capital won a five-set thriller over crosstown rival Helena High in loser-out action at the State AA volleyball tournament on Friday evening. Helena High finished fourth place in the tournament.

The two rivals went back and forth throughout the contest, but the  Bruins won for the third time this season. Ashley and Dani Bartsch had three aces each for Capital, which also got 43 combined assists from Audrey Hofer and Celina Sanchez. The  Bruins racked up 122 digs in the victory.

Capital advances to the trophy round at the State AA tournament and meets No. 1 Billings Senior in the third-place match at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning. The  Broncs fell to Missoula Sentinel in the undefeated semifinal. The defending champion Spartans await the winner of Capital-Senior at 1 p.m.

Missoula Sentinel def. Billings Senior 20-25, 25-13, 25-16, 25-27, 15-8 (undefeated semifinal)

The defending champion is back in the title game. Missoula Sentinel, which capped an undefeated season with the state championship last year, handed Billings Senior its first loss of the season, 20-25, 25-13, 25-16, 25-27, 15-8, in the undefeated semifinal of the State AA volleyball tournament on Friday.

Kylie Frohlich had a match-high 15 kills for Sentinel, which also got 11 kills from reigning Gatorade Player of the Year Elsa Godwin. Maddy Hanich and Shelby Schweyen each added five blocks for the Spartans, who will play in Saturday’s championship at 1 p.m.

Raegan Steiner had nine kills and Kelsey Sargent eight for Senior, which will play in the third-place match Saturday at 11 a.m.

Helena High def. Billings West 25-23, 17-25, 25-12, 25-22

Jamie Pickens had 19 kills and eight blocks as Helena High defeated Billings West in four sets, 25-23, 17-25, 25-12, 25-22 in loser-out action on Friday afternoon at the State AA volleyball tournament.

Emily Feller added seven kills and 34 assists for the Lady Bengals, who meet crosstown rival Helena Capital Friday night at 8 p.m. in the fourth-place match. The winner is guaranteed a top-three finish.

Helena Capital def. Bozeman 21-25, 25-20, 25-10, 25-17

Sarah Ashley had 14 kills and 23 digs and Katie Culver added 10 kills and 15 digs as Helena Capital earned a 21-25, 25-20, 25-10, 25-17 win over Bozeman in loser-out action Friday at the State AA volleyball tournament.

Dani Bartsch contributed six blocks and five aces for the Bruins, who will play another loser-out match Friday at 8 p.m.

Billings West def. Kalispell Glacier 19-25, 17-25, 25-18, 25-13, 15-11

Billings West rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat Kalispell Glacier 19-25, 17-25, 25-18, 25-13, 15-11 and extend its season at the State AA volleyball tournament. Catherine Follett (11) and Megan Benton (10) combined for 21 kills for the Golden Bears in the Friday loser-out match. Follett added five blocks, and Kinzee Koch contributed 24 digs and two aces.

West will play Helena High in another loser-out match Friday at 4 p.m.

Bozeman def. Great Falls 25-19, 25-20, 25-23

Mara Lynch had 14 kills, 12 digs and two aces and Sutton Vargo had seven kills and 12 digs as Bozeman rolled to a 25-19, 25-20, 25-23 sweep of Great Falls in loser-out play at the State AA volleyball tournament.

Cassie Rosa contributed 28 assists and a block for the Hawks, who will play Helena Capital in another loser-out match Friday at 2 p.m.
