SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Montana State junior Tyler Hall has been named to the 2018 Julius Erving Award preseason watch list, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Wednesday.
The award annually goes to the best small forward in NCAA men’s basketball. Josh Hart of Villanova won the award last season.
Hall is one of 21 players put on the preseason watch list, alongside the likes of Arizona’s Rawle Alkins, Michigan State’s Miles Bridges and Missouri’s Michael Porter Jr., the No. 1-ranked recruit in the nation.
Hall, who averaged 23.1 points per game last season, was named the Big Sky Conference’s preseason MVP earlier this month. With 1,317 career points, Hall is one of just four rising juniors with more than 1,200 career points. The Bobcats were picked to finish fourth in the league after going 16-16 last season, including an 11-7 conference mark.
“We go hard in practice, we challenge each other every day, so it’s great recognition for the team,” Hall said in a release from Montana State. “We have a lot of expectations we want to live up to.”
Oregon State’s Tres Tinkle, who was a two-time Montana Gatorade Player of the Year while playing at Missoula Hellgate High School, was named to the Julius Erving Award watch list prior to last season. Tinkle averaged 20.2 points and 8.3 rebounds in six games last year before breaking his wrist and missing the remainder of the season.
