HIGHWOOD – The battle of unbeatens in the 6-man north lived up to the hype on Friday evening, as No. 1 Valier edged No. 3 Geraldine-Highwood 40-38.

Colten Curry, the Montana Grizzly commit, scored the first 14 points of the game for the Panthers. The 6-foot-7 do-everything Curry rushed into the right corner of the end zone on his first score, then hauled in a Coltin Christiaens touchdown pass in double coverage.

Following a Brady Duvall touchdown pass to Mavrick McKinlay, Wacey Running Crane scampered 20 years untouched to give Valier a 20-8 advantage. Running Crane returned a punt nearly 80 yards to give Valier the 27-8 edge.

But Duvall and the Rivals weren’t intimidated by the high-powered offense of the Panthers. The Geraldine-Highwood quarterback hit Bryce Birgenheier for a score to cut the deficit to 27-14 at halftime. Duvall found Joey Hale on the opening drive of the second half to bring the Rivals within five.

The teams went back and forth over the final two frames, but Valier’s victory pushed the top-ranked Panthers to 5-0. Geraldine-Highwood falls to 4-1 with the loss.
