FLORENCE – Florence football has competed in every game despite a very difficult schedule so far this season. Now it might be time to pay attention to the Falcons.
The Falcons struggled to score in some of their close losses this season, falling 13-0 to Jefferson and 14-8 to Bigfork. But still took some confidence from those games, because the Panthers and Vikings are undefeated this year.
Then the offense took off thanks to the KPAX Athletes of the Week. Florence put up 44 points in a win at Deer Lodge last Friday. Sophomore quarterback Colby Kohlman threw for 365 yards and six touchdowns, with senior receiver Marcus Zeiler hauling in 10 catches for 160 yards and three scores.
Head coach Pat Duchien says the two have a relationship similar to a big brother and little brother. And when Deer Lodge sold out to stop the run, the connection took flight.
“It was a lot of fun. Our deep balls worked well,” said Kohlman. “I’ve gotten better at it. I’ve just been working hard, and showing up to practice.”
“It’s fun coming out and having such a young kid,” said Zeiler about Kohlman. “He has such an arm on him. He can throw the ball. It’s fun to have him go throw it, and see if I can chase it down.”
Florence struggled the past couple seasons. But Zeiler and the Falcons have bought into a new plan to turn things around.
“This year has been a lot different. We’ve gone through a culture change,” said Zeiler. “We want to get to state. We want to be in the playoffs. Everyone shows up wanting to work this year, so it’s just a whole different atmosphere.”
Florence goes to Anaconda this Friday night. A win would move the Falcons one step closer to the Class B playoffs.
