KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Griff Amies of the Rocky Mountain College football team has been named the NAIA Special Teams Player of the Week, the national office announced this afternoon. The second award of the day follows the Frontier Conference award he won this morning.
Amies, a senior from Newport Beach, Calif., helped the Battlin’ Bears to a 40-14 win at Carroll on Saturday. Amies scored 16 points in the game making all four of his field goal attempts and all four of his PAT attempts.
The win by the Battlin’ Bears was the team’s first in Helena in 17 years. Amies also contributed with two touchbacks on kickoffs.
Amies is the second Rocky player in two weeks to take home the Frontier Special Teams of the Week award after Sam Sparks earned the honor last week. This is the first NAIA national player of the week award by a Rocky player since Bruce Baker won the offensive award during week one of the 2013 season.
Rocky Mountain also received seven points in the NAIA Football Coaches’ Top 25 Poll that was released on Monday. The Battlin’ Bears are 2-1 on the season and this is the first time they have earned votes in the national poll since October 27, 2014.
Rocky returns to Herb Klindt Field on Saturday when they host No. 5 Montana Tech during Hall of Fame Weekend. Montana Tech is 2-0 on the season and tied with Rocky and Southern Oregon atop the Frontier Conference standings.
