BILLINGS – As donations and rescue efforts continue to funnel into the gulf area due to Hurricane Harvey, Montanans are also stepping up help. That includes the women’s basketball program at Rocky Mountain College.

Coach Wes Keller emailed his Battlin’ Bear colleagues Tuesday asking for gear donations to send south. Men’s basketball, volleyball and track and field teams responded.

They packaged up a box full of clothes and shipped it off Wednesday morning.

It was sparked by a social media plea on Twitter from University of Houston head basketball coach Kelvin Sampson. He, of course, earned his first head coaching job at Montana Tech, and later coached at Oklahoma and Indiana, as well as in the NBA.

Sampson is requesting school shirts, shoes and any gear teams might have available to send to those in need. Colleges and high schools across Montana have jumped in, with Rocky’s men and women the latest on Wednesday.

The plea has drawn a enormous response. If you look at Sampson’s Twitter feed (@CoachSampsonUH), he’s re-tweeting a barrage of pictures from nationwide teams reaching out to help the gulf area.
