MISSOULA – When 14 outstanding golfers all sat within four shots of the lead after Round 1 of the U.S. Amateur Qualifier, it would take a great final round to pull away for a win at the Ranch Club. Spokane’s Reid Hatley had it in the bag.

The 2016 Northwest PGA Mid-Am player of the year carded a four-under-par 68, securing a two-shot victory at the 36-hole U.S. Amateur Qualifying tournament. Hatley shot one over par on his opening round on Monday to trail the leaders by one, but he matched the best round of Tuesday on a difficult Ranch Club course to finish three under overall.

Hatley earns the one ticket from the qualifier into the U.S. Amateur Tournament at Riviera Country Club in California next month. Hatley made a good run at the 2001 U.S. Amateur, when he was playing college golf at Arizona. He was one of the older players in the field, but handled the current college challengers in Missoula.

No one shot under par in the opening round. Helena’s Riley Lawrence and Canada’s Evan Holmes led after even-par 72s. Four golfers managed to reach red numbers on Tuesday, including Holmes.

His one-under 71 put him in a tie for second place. Fellow Canadian Brendan MacDougall matched Hatley with a 68, to climb to one under and tie Holmes. MacDougall then won a five-hole playoff against Holmes, to claim second place and the alternate spot for the U.S. Amateur.

Lawrence shot even par for a second straight day. The recent Helena Capital grad had the best finish of any Montana native, tying for fourth place.

Payton Stott of Billings also recorded an even-par 72 on Tuesday to finish in sixth place. Anaconda’s Caleb Stetzner, who won the Montana State Am at the Missoula Country Club on Saturday, finished 11 shots back in a tie for 10th place.
