LAUREL – Never bet against Sue Matson at home.
The Laurel native fired an opening round 79 – the only player to break 80 – in round one of the Montana State Women’s Senior Amateur Thursday to take a one shot lead at Laurel Golf Club.
Starting on No. 10, Matson was +6 through her first six holes, but played the final 12 in just +1, including an even-par 36 on the front nine, with birdies on No. 5 and No. 7. Matson won the event the last time Laurel hosted it in 2008.
Helene Michael is one shot back after an opening round 80. The Condon resident – a small, unincorporated town southeast of Flathead Lake – shot 40 on both nines in a steady day.
Helena’s Susan Court is two back after a first-round 81. Court, a two-time champion of the Women’s Senior Am, recorded a day-high 12 pars, but also carded two sevens.
Libby’s Bobbie Macklen is four back after an 83, while Billings’ Laura Wilson and Whitefish’s Karen Jacobson are tied for fifth with an 86.
