(Note: Helena Brewers release)
OGDEN, Utah – Four errors in the first three innings hurt the Helena Brewers (12-15) as they fell to the Ogden Raptors 7-4 on Sunday afternoon at Lindquist Field, their fourth straight loss.
Sloppy play came back to bite the Brewers in the bottom of the second inning. A hit by pitch and walk put a pair of runners on for the Raptors before Dallas Carroll committed a fielding error, loading the bases. Brock Carpenter grounded into a double play but a run scored to give Ogden a 1-0 lead. The next two batters reached on a walk and another error by Carroll, bringing in a run to make it 2-0. Starter Harold Chirino (1-2) committed a throwing error on a pickoff attempt at first that allowed a runner to race in and score from third, pushing the Raptors lead to 3-0. Starling Heredia brought in the final run of the inning with a single that extended the Raptor lead to 4-0. Ogden scored all four runs while recording just one hit in the inning.
Helena found a response in the top of the third inning. Nicolas Pierre doubled to start the inning and advanced to third on a groundout. Carroll brought him home with a double to right field, putting the Brewers on the board. Carroll stole third and was driven in two batters later by KJ Harrison, cutting the Raptors lead to 4-2.
Ogden found a run in both the fourth and fifth inning to push their lead back to four runs at 6-2. After two scoreless innings, the Raptors got to reliever Braulio Ortiz for a run in the seventh, extending the lead to 7-2.
The Brewers showed signs of life in the ninth thanks to patient at-bats from the bottom of the order. Yerald Martinez, Zach Clark and Franly Mallen all walked to load up the bases, forcing a pitching change from the Raptors. New reliever Jeff Paschke walked Pierre, forcing in a run, the first run the Brewers have scored in a ninth inning this season. The wind came out of the sails for Helena after Antonio Pinero grounded into a 1-6-3 double play that scored a run but cornered the Brewers with one out remaining. Carroll grounded out to Pascheke to end the ball game, sealing the Brewers fourth loss of their seven game road trip.
In total, Helena batters struck out 12 times and went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position. The pitching staff issued seven walks, including six in the first four innings.
