HELENA – Dallas Carroll set the tone with a lead-off home run Monday night as the Helena Brewers held off a late Missoula Osprey rally, 9-5 at Kindrick Legion Field.

Carroll connected on his first home run of the season on the fifth pitch he saw, a solo shot over the left-center field wall at Kindrick Legion Field, giving Helena the lead for the remainder of the ball game. But Carroll’s heroics were hardly the end of the inning for the Brewers.

Five batters later, Yerald Martinez took advantage of a curve ball across the center of the plate, blasting a three-run home run some 420 feet over the center field wall as Helena built an early 4-0 lead. The scoring continued when Antonio Pinero’s double to the right field corner scored Franly Mallen and Nic Pierre.

When the inning was complete, Helena had batted 11 times, scored six runs on five hits, two home runs and faced two different pitchers. The Brewers forced two mound visits from the Osprey, including a pitching change after eight batters. Williams Durruthy replaced Franklyn Soriano, only to give up the two-RBI double to Pinero in the next at-bat.

Helena (11-11) tacked on runs in the fourth and eighth innings with Pierre driving in Payton Henry, who added an RBI of his own in the bottom of the eighth.

Still, Missoula (11-11) made things interesting late when Eduardo Diaz tripled to right field and scored William Gorman. Jose Caballero drove in Diaz in the next at-bat to bring the score to 9-5. Brandon Texiera struck out Luis Lara to seal the victory for the Brewers.

Each team has Tuesday evening off due to the Major League Baseball all-star game.
