CHICAGO – Annie Hill knew 2017 was going to be a big year. The Kalispell Glacier junior capped the prep track and field season by winning the Gatorade Montana girls track and field athlete of the year. The organization announced the news on Thursday.
Hill swept the three distance races at the Class AA state track and field invitational in Butte in late May, winning the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 9.27 seconds, the mile in 4:54.61 and the two-mile in 10:46.10. She also finished runner-up in the 400-meter dash, placing three-tenths of a second behind champion Maddie Brockel of Billings West.
“Annie Hill is one of the premier track and field athletes from Montana,” said Arie Grey, head coach at Butte High. “The range that she has is truly remarkable. She had a very special year and is a true representative of Montana track and field. She is a special athlete and a lot of fun to watch.”
Hill helped the Wolfpack to a second-place finish in the Class AA team race. She earned a fourth-place finish in the Brooks PR girls mile race last weekend and already captured the Gatorade player of the year honor during the 2015-16 cross country season.
At the time of Thursday’s release, Hill ranked No. 29 in the nation for season best in the 800-meter run (2:08.69), No. 10 in the 1,600-meter run (4:47.30) and No. 13 in the 3,200-meter run (10:15.21).
Hill has maintained a 4.0 GPA at Glacier High School and is a member of the National Honor Society. She also volunteers in the local Boys and Girls Club of America. She became the first female athlete in school history to win the prestigious Gatorade player of the year award in track and field and becomes the first Kalispell female to win since Flathead’s Zoe Nelson in 2005.
According to Gatorade, “the award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the track,” is in its 32nd year of honoring the nation’s best athletes.
Dawson LaRance of Billings Senior was named the Gatorade Montana boys track and field athlete of the year.
