SHORELINE, Wash. – Dawson LaRance is doing his best to carry the Billings Senior tradition into national focus.

The distance specialist overtook three runners in the final 100 meters Saturday to win the Boys 800 meter run at the Brooks PR Invitational just outside of Seattle. LaRance out-leaned Texas runner Reed Brown at the line to win by .03 seconds – 1:50.98 to 1:51.01.

“I’m really, really happy. I’m blessed to be here,” LaRance told FloTrack reporter Billy Cvecko after the win. “It was a great race with a great group of guys and I gave it all I had the last 200.”

LaRance was in the front-half of the pack through most of the race. The pace was slow in the opening 150 meters, but it sped up on the final lap. Cade Bethmann took the lead with 400 meters to go, but couldn’t hold off LaRance and Brown, who caught and passed him in the final straightaway.

The win is reminiscent of former Billings Senior star Christina Aragon’s stellar summer season last year. Aragon just finished her freshman year at Stanford, where she earned all-America honors in both cross country and outdoor track and field.

LaRance is headed to the University of Minnesota in the fall.
