GREAT FALLS – Great Falls High and Missoula Sentinel started off slow-playing each other in the first round of the State AA softball tournament.

The scoreboard still read zeros in the bottom of the fifth, when Bison shortstop Tanaya Krenik smacked an Amber Hickethier pitch to deep left field. It was originally called foul, but after some discussion, the umpires called it a home run, giving Great Falls High a 1-0 advantage.

Krenik had a solid day, going 2-for-3 with a base hit and home run. Later in the bottom of the sixth inning, first baseman Molly Schmitz gave the ball a ride to center field for a double. Sentinel center fielder Taylor Holmes couldn’t handle the ball. A run would score on Schmitz’s play and that would be it. Great Falls High would go on to win 2-0.

Great Falls High will go on to play Billings Senior at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Great Falls Multi-Sports Complex.
