HELENA – Coaches always discuss the importance of peaking at the end of the season. Helena High softball coach Ryan Schulte must be overjoyed with pitcher Terra Gilchrist’s peak.
The Helena High pitcher tossed a perfect game en route to a 10-0 blowout over Kalispell Flathead in game one of their best-of-three playoff series. Gilchrist fanned 10 batters in five innings of work in the game shortened due to the 10-run rule.
Taryn Holland collected two hits and four RBI for the Lady Bengals. Mariah English added two hits and two RBI in the victory.
Flathead took an early 1-0 lead in game two of the series, but Helena High wasted little time repeating its play from the opener.
MacKenna Schmolke’s sacrifice fly brought in the tying run in Addie Slanger to tie the game at 1-1. Hailey Crawford’s dribbler mere feet in front of home plate wasn’t fielded in time, as Sam Holman crossed for a 2-1 lead and Helena High never trailed again.
The Lady Bengals bats exploded in the top of the third inning, with Slanger, Holman, Schmolke, Mariah English and Crawford all driving in runs. Helena High plated nine runs in the inning before winning 16-1 in another five-inning contest.
Helena High will compete in the Class AA state softball tournament next weekend in Great Falls.
