Shawn Chaffin, a Florence native and longtime basketball coach, will be the next head women’s basketball coach at San Diego Christian College.
Chaffin confirmed that he’s accepted the position to MTN Sports on Friday.
Chaffin was most recently an assistant women’s basketball coach at Minot State in North Dakota. He was the Beavers’ recruiting coordinator since 2011, but is leaving the program after longtime head coach Sheila Green Gerding stepped down in March. Green Gerding, a Clancy native, was at Minot State for 22 years.
San Diego Christian is a member of the Golden State Athletic Conference in the NAIA and will be Chaffin’s fourth stint at the NAIA level. He was an assistant coach at the University of Montana Western from 2000-2006 before becoming the head coach at the University of Great Falls in 2006. Chaffin guided the Lady Argos for four seasons and then spent one season on the staff at Montana State University-Northern before going to Minot State.
Chaffin will replace Irvin Jerry, who coached San Diego Christian for four seasons and led the Hawks to a 16-12 record last season. They were 6-10 in the difficult GSAC, which featured four top 25 teams last season.
